He is a well-known scientist in the field of cybernetics, system analysis, and decision-making theory. He generalized the basic concepts of the theory of system analysis, laid the foundations of system mathematics, proposed a new approach to the theory of extremal problems for nonlinear operator, differential-operator equations and inclusions, variational inequalities. He also laid the foundations for the axiomatic study of nonlinear multivalued mappings and, in their terms, established the properties of the solving operators of systems consisting of operator and differential-operator equations. He discovered the solvability conditions and properties of solutions of extremal problems, constructed their weak extensions and the necessary optimality conditions in the form of variational inequalities. Developed regularization methods and substantiated approximation schemes.
The best-known results of his applied scientific research relate to the field of mathematical geophysics, geoinformatics, and socio-economic problems of modern society.
The scientific school of M.Z. Zgurovsky produced 9 Doctor of Science and more than 40 Ph.D. degree holders. He is the author of 50 inventions, author and co-author of more than 400 scientific works, 38 monographs and textbooks published in Germany, Poland, Japan, Ukraine and other countries of the world.
Under the scientific leadership of M.Z. Zgurovsky, the Institute for Applied System Analysis of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the World Data Center "Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development", specializing in the field of geoinformatics in the field of global modeling, were established in Ukraine processes of sustainable development and assessment of global risks regarding the safety and quality of life of mankind.
